Kind of on brand for our late capitalistic hellscape to turn LOTR into some forgettable franchise spammed with endless spawn-off content. Ironic that Tolkien himself stipulated in his will, that Disney should not get the film-rights to his work, only to find that the market logic got some other studio behemoth to do the exact same thing.

Very orcish for something timeless, fair, and wonderful to be taken by the dark powers, tortured and mutilated into a ruined form of media. And yes, he found Disney quite distasteful haha. But it seems he could only delay the inevitable.

Yeah I think that at the time he mostly feared that Disney would turn it into some kind of childish fairy tale cartoon thing, not the wastelands of endless marketing content mills...

Leaving aside the obvious point that anything more they do with Middle-Earth will necessarily be terrible - is Goldman Sachs, with all the resources of Mordor at its command, really unable to think up (or employ a marketing agency who could think up) a better name for its entertainment conference than Communacopia?

Perhaps the Shadow really is only a small and passing thing. After all, it can only mock, it cannot make: not real new things if its own.

hahaha, I know! I had to double check that I got the name right at the end, as I could hardly believe that it was really called that.

I feel more nervous than excited about all of these upcoming adaptations... 🙈

I would say I'm more nervous than excited too! We'll see how they turn out...at least we'll always have the Peter Jackson films (and to go even further back, the books themselves!)

I want to say something clever, but all I can think of is: UGH.

You've succinctly encapsulated my feelings lol

WTF. The Mouse is going to try to out do what Peter Jackson did? No.

No. NO. NOOOOOO.

That title is aces! Great read.

I'm devastated that there will be new LotR films, even though it was inevitable. Hopefully it won't be Rings of Power level bad.

Thank you, Eric! Glad you enjoyed the article and the title as well. I took a little more time with the title than I do usually, so I'm glad that it paid off haha.

I have some small hope for them. I know there isn't really much hope. Just a fool's hope. But we all could be surprised! As the years go by I find it more and more incredible that we got the level of quality that we did with Jackson's LOTR trilogy.

Speaking of hope, I still have hope for The Rings of Power! I still find it more enjoyable than The Hobbit trilogy...that's not saying that much though! It still has time to improve. We'll see whether it does or whether it goes the way of The Hobbit trilogy and just drops off a cliff at the end.

Have you watched any of the fan edits of The Hobbit? I found a good one that edits the trilogy down into one 3-hour film. It's definitely my preferred way to watch those movies.

No, I haven't! I've heard of them but never watched one. Which is the version you watched?

A pretty damning indictment of a trilogy if you need to edit it down to one movie to get a good movie out of it lol. Then again, what do you expect of a trilogy made out of one (1) children's story?
